Exactly what is a digital pen and what is digital paper is a common question we get from prospective clients.

Here is a brief explanation for you.

The Digital Pen & Paper system was developed to enhance the experience of people using the world’s most tried and true recorded communication system - pen and paper!

The system works by allowing a traditional pen & paper to enter the digital world and bring recorded notes and information into a digital system.

For our clients that means being able to have field service staff complete forms and `return’ them digitally to the office within seconds of completing the form. This minimises the risk of lost forms and improves work flow and cash flow efficiencies for the business.

The Digital Paper is just a piece of ordinary paper on which a proprietary pattern of dots has been printed. To the eye this pattern is perceived as a slightly off-white colour. The pattern of 6×6 dots uniquely defines the position on the full pattern, which encompasses an area exceeding 4.6 million km², this equals roughly 73 trillion unique A4 size papers.

The Digital Pen is a slightly oversized ink based pen with some electronic componentry inside. The pen contains a small camera with an infra red illuminator to `read’ it’s location on the dot pattern. This location is recorded as the user makes a pen stroke on the page. Each pen stroke is recorded at the precise place it was on the page so that the full hand writing is perfectly recorded.

The data of the pen strokes is recorded in the internal memory of the pen and is then able to be exported by either bluetooth or docking it to it’s USB cradle. When transmitted via bluetooth, it can be sent into the Internet via a bluetooth enabled mobile phone and the data can be transmitted immediately back to an office where it can be stored and printed as a PDF complete capture of the form, or can be checked, edited and imported into a back office software system.

For increased security and traceability, each pen has a unique identifier that allows all information to be recorded and tracked back to its original source, as well as time and date stamping the information.
